Players fight as the Knight, a tiny, insect-esque little creature who’s forced to fight off massive insects with a rusty nail while they traverse Hallownest, an ancient kingdom that has fallen into ruin after a plague ravaged its citizens. It’s also available on a variety of platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, so players have a chance to play in multiple formats. It’s a truly loveable game, with goofy graphics, a deceptively simple-seeming premise, and challenging enough gameplay to keep things interesting.
While “Hungry Knight” didn’t exactly earn raves from its players, the pair decided to re-work the concept into Hollow Knight, a Metroidvania-style action adventure game, which raised over fifty thousand dollars on Kickstarter and hit shelves in 2017.
